OpenShift Origin enables you to create, deploy and manage applications within the cloud. It provides disk space, CPU resources, memory, network connectivity, and an Apache or JBoss server. Depending on the type of application being deployed, a template file system layout is provided (for example, php, python, and ruby/rails). It also manages a limited DNS for the application.

I think this pretty much summerises all the thoughts and feelings I've had about PHP over the years. PHP is just painful to work with.

"PHP is a community of amateurs. Very few people designing it, working on it, or writing code in it seem to know what they’re doing. (Oh, dear reader, you are of course a rare exception!) Those who do grow a clue tend to drift away to other platforms, reducing the average competence of the whole. This, right here, is the biggest problem with PHP: it is absolutely the blind leading the blind."

Setting up some new servers this morning, I was surprised to NOT find sun-java6-jdk packages in the Ubuntu 10.04 partner repositories. After a bit of googling I found a couple of posts (below) that show the reasons why.

OpenJdk is succeeding the sun jdk as the official Java 7 implementation and due to licensing issues has pulled the license for OS distributors. That's great news for OpenJdk, but not for my current server setup. It doesn't help me with Java 6 as there are problems with OpenJdk v 6, that stopped us from using it in the first place. Looks like I'll have to dig up a deb package from somewhere and live without updates. :(

At the yow developer conference in Brisbane last month, I attended a two day workshop to learn how to do Scrum properly. I felt liberated after the coarse and realised that software project management doesn't have to be 'that' hard.

The organisation I currenly work for may not implement all of the scrum principles, but even taking some of those principles on board is really going to reduce stress and enable us to work at a consistent, sustainable pace. Now this trick is getting all the players to agree ...

Just installed ubuntu 11.10 on my home media center. So far it's much improved from 11.04. There's a heap of nice new features and it just seems a lot more polished. Thank God they finally got rid of the old gnome-login system. There are a few little issues I've encoutered, but there's a good post here on how to tweak a few things. Not able to change the desktop font size ... wtf

After confronting the fear of bricking my phone, I finally got the guts to root and flash the rom on my HTC Desire. It's been running Android 2.2 Froyo for most of it's life and with the HTC Sense UI it's been a delight. It came with Android 2.1 out of the box and was updated to 2.2 via the Optus network. I've been waiting for an upgrade to 2.3, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Unfortunately, the limited internal memory (256mb) has become a bit of a blocker, so I decided to try and find a light weight version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread that I could install. I looked into it briefly a while back, but ran into a problem installing the rom because I couldn't get root access to the phone.

A little while down the track now and I found this great tool called unrevoked. It's available at the following link and will basically unlock your phone and install ClockworkMod recovery tool. It was all very much point and click, so it would even be suitable for all the windows users out there.

The basic steps where to:

1. Root the phone with unrevoked
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked3
http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/20/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-unrevoked-me...

2. Install system rom
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide
http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/21/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-des...
http://theunlockr.com/category/roms-2/android-roms-2/htc-desire-roms-2/
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-official-gingerbread-rom-on-...

3. Install Google Apps rom from cyanogenmod
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version#Google_Apps

More:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/solve-low-free-space-problem-on-htc-...

So, at the end of the day I have a fancy new phone with extra grunt without paying a cent. It seems more responsive that ever and even though I haven't tried any other roms, I'll probably stick with cyanogenmod for the time being. I have plenty of free space on the internal memory and it's settings allow you to automatically install all apps on the SD card. +1 for open source

Every now and then I get my hands dirty with a bit of shell scripting. Using bash, it's possible to do some quite powerful things in relation to system administration. However, as I'm not doing it all the time, I often find myself scratching my head for the correct syntax. While searching for the way to pipe the console output to a function I came across this nice tutorial. It covers quite a bit, so I thought I'd re-post for future reference.
