This is just a minor note but a really powerful piece of information. Eric Stevens of the B And E Blog did some memory usage testing involving ColdFusion 8 and the CFContent tag and the findings are very cool: I just did a test in CF 8 using FusionReactor to watch memory while using <cfcontent type="application/x-zip-compressed" file="#ExpandPath('bigfile.zip')#"> Memory was at 141 ... Just a really quick post here. In my previous post on creating semi-secure file downloads , Todd Rafferty brought up the idea that the reason we want to avoid CFContent is because it loads the entire file into memory before it flushes it to the browser. He made the point that the problem is not so much the tying up of threads via CFContent, but rather the fa ... Read More »

In the past, I have been asked several times how to create secure file downloads without tying up resources in the ColdFusion thread pool. Really, when you want to create a good, secure download, you would want to funnel the file requests through some sort of ColdFusion control logic and then stream a non-web-accessible file to the user via ColdFusion's CFContent tag. The problem with this is that the CFContent tag ties up a ColdFusion thread for the entire duration of the download. This wor .

if you've ever had to deal with email addresses you know it's sometimes a black black art to verify RFC-2822 compliance. ColdFusion's isValid() function is certainly handy for this but it's not 100% (actually i don't think anything is 100% RFC-2822 compliant, just have a read thru RFC-2822 to see what i mean).

So, after the most unfortunate and untimely closing of my previous employer about a month ago, I've been spending a lot of time fretting about work. Not so much that I wouldn't be able to find something, but finding a job that had the same interest level, would push me out of my comfort zone (in good ways), and, hopefully, last for a long, long time.
Fortunately, before things officially shut down, my boss introduced me to one Mr. Jared Ficklin (here demonstrating a nice fire-based audio visua

After about two years of threatening to learn Flex I'm finally doing it. I started by completing the "Adobe Flex 2 Rich Internet Applications" DVD-ROM course from Total Training. I have to admit, I wasn't sure how I'd like the format given that I usually learn by reading a book on a particular topic then experimenting, but I liked the course. And I know what your thinking, "Flex 2?," but from what I

You can safely bypass paying your tolls driving straight through the middle gap between all the toll booths on a motorcycle. You need to be on a motorcycle, because it's the only vehicle that will fit. :) Sometimes I don't feel like outrunning the cops and don't like slowing down to pay the tool, so slipping between the booths saves me a lot of time (although I admittedly have been using t

In ColdFusion I could easily use the GenerateSecretKey function. However, if I do that, how would I pass that key to Flex? It would have to be hard coded in some manner into the Flex Component that needed the encryption algorithm.
What I wanted was a way to generate the key on
