Combat Questions (v0.13)

A thread for combat-related questions that don’t fit better in some other thread.

If I successfully block all the damage from an enemy attack (whether via a Defence roll or Armor or some combination thereof) do I also block any Status or Condition effects that an enemy has added to their attack through a Power? or are Status/Condition effects automatically applied by enemies when triggered?

If an enemy attacks and activates a Power and my Defence roll against this attack is a mis-match, does the enemy immediately become refresshed (if they are, in virtue of having activated this power, in the process of becoming the only/strongest exhausted enemy?)

Looking more closely at it, I think the answer is “no, because your Defence Phase in which you roll the dice occurs before the Enemy Attack phase, so you’ll have rolled the miss-match before they’ve activated the Power.”

When an enemy Unequips an equipment card in virtue of activating a relevant Power, what does it mean that the Equipment card is “discarded” ?

  • Is it put to the bottom of the item/equipment draw deck (and thus removed from the “loot pile” for this combat encounter)?
  • Is it un-tucked from the Denizen’s Equip pile and set aside (but kept in the “loot pile” for this combat encounter)?
  • Is it removed from the game entirely?

(Similar questions for Denizen and Loot discard rules, outside of combat as well).

How should I be resolving the “Imbue: Type I Anarch” trait when setting up an encounter with this denizen? (Ignore the pink arrow pointing at the “Guarded” icon, I ganked this from the RB.)

  • Glossary/Index v0.13 entry for “Imbue” says: “Trait requirement a True-Name to be drawn and atached when the denizen is revealed…” and refers me to RB 41.
  • RB 41 only shows examples of Denizen cards that do not contain the “Imbue” keyword. Hunting around, the section on True-Names on RB 23 and 28 don’t provide any help here.
  • Anarchomagnus’ card says “Imbue: Type I Anarch.” Every True-Name card has a side marked “Type I” but none of them say anything about “Anarch.”
  • The QR materials (as well as the Icon Glossary) Show that there is a Memory Sphere with the tile “Anarch” corresponding to the bottom Memory Sphere shown on the bottom-right corner of the Anarchomagnus card.
  • At this point I realized that the BACK of the True-Names cards mark them as “Elemental”, “Archon” or “Anarch.” So I guess the instruction that’s missing here is: draw a random Anarch True-Name card using the info on the card back, then flip it over and “enchant” the denizen with the Type I side.

This one isn’t a question, just wanted to show the spanking/encounter in which these questions arose (which is worse than I initially thought now that I’ve sorted out Imbue).

For the Stone Alter I drew Anarchomagus. The encounter added a Bolster to the Anarchomagus’ initial Bloster, so I had to draw 2 loot/equip cards, and the threat card added another 3, all of which matched, so that was a total of 5 loot that spawned 3 enemies. Quite daunting.

General advice in this situation… Run! :man_running:

Hilariously, I got hammered by “David Bowie” and friends this weekend; endured twice. Then I resurrected him as an undead minion… he’s deadly. But I’m not sure we will be strong enough to survive the quest given my max health is 4.

You have interpreted this correctly. I’ve added a note to add something about matching the Anarch/Archon/Elemental keywords on the back of true names.

When I use the term discard/discarded in the rules, this should universally mean put the card in the relevant decks discard pile. The only exception is “discard to Memories”; memories is a mixed discard that is held temporarily in the players own tableau.

Is it put to the bottom of the item/equipment draw deck (and thus removed from the “loot pile” for this combat encounter)?

Unequip forces you to remove the tucked card and place it in the loot discard pile. It will be shuffled back into the deck when all the loot cards have been drawn.

Thematically, Unequip represents the denizen using the loot; spell reagents, thrown weapon, healing potion, etc. This works the same way for companions and enemies.

“No”, is correct.

You resolve the miss-match immediately before resolution of the skill check. This is before the enemy attacks.

Unfortunately, in a defence roll a miss-match often means that an exhausted enemy will have a stronger attack with one of their powers, and you have no defence at all.

This is controversial – @skink hates this one.

Status and condition effects always apply if the attack is made by an enemy, even if all damage is blocked or absorbed by armour.

The only way to avoid status/conditions is to prevent a “powered” attack by exhausting the denizen so they only have a base attack.

Important to note that is true of your own attacks, and those of your companions. Even if you do no damage to an enemy if the attack was successful the status and conditions will apply.

I think the root issue here is that the Rulebook makes no mention of any “relevant deck’s discard pile.” It does not say anywhere that discarded cards get set aside until the draw deck runs out, and then the discard pile gets reshuffled to form a new draw deck.

The only shuffled deck during play is the loot deck. So universal is a one deck thing

Hmm … apart from the play area image I don’t think I say anywhere that the loot deck discard is reshuffled. I will add to the rules to make it clearer.

lol, set aside the reshuffle rule, my point is there is no rule in the rulebook that tells players what to do with discarded cards except the “discard to memory” case.

Bonus round: it’s not clear how “Bury” is distinct from discard.

See above re loot.

Bury — means to place the card at the bottom of the relevant deck.
Banish — means remove from the game for this session.

I do think it is a bit Feel Bad to successfully block a hit by use of wits, resources or luck and STILL get walloped by the status (it was mostly because I was trapped in an Entangled+Weakened loop of my own erroneous making)… But respect the rules consistency that my attack status will also always be applied to an enemy. Some guarateed tactical utilisation is a meaningful choice and a positive thing overall I think, so I can get behind it :+1:
